R.I.P. RICHARD LEWIS
On behalf of Comedy Gives Back, we extend our deepest gratitude to the late Richard Lewis, whose incomparable comedic talent and unwavering commitment to our cause have left an indelible mark on our organization and the comedy community at large. Richard's unique brand of humor, marked by his raw honesty and razor-sharp wit, captivated audiences for decades, earning him a revered place in the pantheon of comedy greats, and we mourn this monumental loss.
Richard's journey as a comedian in sobriety deeply resonated with him, and it was this personal connection that drew him to Comedy Gives Back. Understanding firsthand the challenges faced by comedians, particularly those navigating the demanding world of entertainment while maintaining sobriety, Richard was a passionate advocate for mental health and addiction recovery within the comedy industry, including joining the board of Comedy Gives Back. He once stated, “So grateful for Comedy Gives Back. If there was something like it when I was an up and coming comedian, I might have gotten sober sooner.”
His support for our organization was not merely a gesture of goodwill but a reflection of his profound belief in the power of comedy to heal and unite, even joining 59 other comedians for our Christmas Magic video. Through his generosity and unwavering dedication, Richard helped to ensure that comedians in need received the support and resources necessary to thrive both personally and professionally, even establishing the Kitty Bruce Fund to support Lenny Bruce’s daughter and fellow comedy community advocate.
We also want to express our deepest appreciation to Joyce Lapinsky, Richard's beloved wife, for her graciousness in encouraging his fans to donate to Comedy Gives Back in his honor. Her support means the world to us, and we are touched by her generosity during this difficult time.
We are profoundly grateful to Richard for his invaluable contributions to Comedy Gives Back and for the laughter and joy he brought to countless lives. As we mourn his passing, we take solace in knowing that his legacy will endure through the countless comedians whose lives he touched and the laughter that will continue to echo in his memory.
